Bringing Baby Home

Research has shown that a couple’s emotional connection is the real foundation for a baby’s development. Bringing Baby Home is an evidence-based educational program for expectant parents and families with infants, developed by relationship experts Drs. John and Julie Gottman.

The program teaches couples how to...

• Strengthen their partnership for their baby’s developmental foundation.

• Enhance relationship satisfaction in early parenting phases.

• Use sensitive, responsive parenting tactics.

• Coordinate effectively with family members for support.

• Maintain both parents’ active involvement with baby.

This program is free for participants who have Alberta Health Care. We recommend purchasing the optional digital workbook ($49 USD) from the Gottman Institute to support your experience. You can purchase your copy here.

Sherry Harris MSW, RSW, RMFT

Clinical Supervisor, Shared Mental Health Care

Sherry (she/her) has a master’s degree in social work and is a registered marriage and family therapist with the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy. She has worked across the continuum of care in mental health care settings for the last 35 years and has been connected to the Shared Mental Health Care program as a mental health consultant and clinical supervisor since 2002.

Working in primary care settings in collaboration with family physicians and providing care together for individuals, couples and families has been a privilege and a passion for 23 years.

Sherry has a special interest in perinatal mental health and is excited to co-facilitate the Bringing Baby Home program with Dr. Heidi, to provide education and support to parents transitioning from being a couple into the magnificent and life altering world of beginning a family.

Sherry is the parent of two adult children who have helped her to learn and grow as a parent and a person, as well as the joy of parenting relationships.

Dr. Heidi Von Engelbrechten MD, CCFP, FCFP

Physician with Low Risk Maternity Care

Dr Heidi (she/her) is a family physician with a special interest in maternal and newborn care and has practiced with the Low Risk Maternity group for 17 years. Recognizing the high prevalence of perinatal depression and anxiety among her patients, she joined the Shared Mental Health program through Recovery Alberta to better support patients during their transition to parenthood. She has experience in group prenatal care, is a trained Bringing Baby Home educator, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor with the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary.

She is excited to co-facilitate this group with Sherry to help couples set a strong foundation for their relationship as they grow their family.

Outside of work, Dr. Heidi finds joy in simple pleasures—a hot cup of tea, walks with her golden retriever, and the lively chaos of family life.
